Movies Under the Stars 0

On Saturday, May 26, Doraville is bringing back its popular “Movies Under the Stars” series in Honeysuckle Park. The movie starts at dusk on a 30′ bigscreen, and all are welcome with no admission charge.  This month’s movie is “We Bought a Zoo,” starring Matt Damond and Scarlett Johnansen

Bring lawn chairs, blankets & a picnic basket; looks like a great event to bring neighbors and kids to.

Doraville Dog Rescue 0

A few months ago, my partner and I found an adorable boxer puppy cowering in our driveway.  He was not more than a few months old, and obviously terrified.  We couldn’t leave him out in the cold, so we brought him into the house.  Our dogs freaked out a little bit when we first brought him in, but got over it pretty quick.  Before long, it was the little puppy who was terrorizing them!

We couldn’t keep the dog, but were not about to let him go to animal control.  Bonnie Flynt, the president of the Northwoods Area Neighbors Group was able to put us in touch with a woman named Margaret who lives just down the street from us and fosters dogs for  Animal Savers Rescue.  We brought the puppy over to our neighbor’s place and she fell in love with him even harder than we did.  She named him Milan, and promised to find him a good home – a promise she made good on, finding Milan a family with 2 little kids to grow up with. It feels really good to know that we were part of that story.

So many people in Doraville love dogs – and several of us like to volunteer for various rescue groups and charities that support animal rescue.  In fact there are two upcoming events that dog lovers should consider participating in:

  • First is the Atlanta Dog Jog – a run/walk event for dogs & their people, benefiting the Georgia Veterinary Medical Association and the Canine Assistants.  I know at least a few Doraville residents are going to be attending!
  • Second is the “Help Dekalb Animals” bowling fundraiser being sponsored by three of the Dekalb County Commissioners – including the one who represents Doraville, Elaine Boyer.  Proceeds go to the Lifeline Animal Project’s spay/neuter project for Dekalb County (benefiting animals who live in cities like Doraville, as well as the county)

Oakcliff – A Doraville Original 3

Northwoods has gotten a lot of attention recently from its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places, but it’s not the only unique neighborhood in Doraville. The Georgia Division of Historic Preservation recently published a presentation (PDF Link) by Richard Cloues on the history of the split level house, with a prominent mention of Oakcliff.

Oakcliff is mentioned at the end of the report. The neighborhood – built by Tom Cousins – is one of the earliest subdivisions in the state to feature lots of split level homes!  The next time I drive through Oakcliff, I’m going to be looking at it with a new set of eyes – seeing a little more of the history involved in these homes which must have been really cutting edge when they were built.

The whole report is great, but I really enjoyed learning a little bit more about Doraville history & about a neighborhood that I have admired for so long!  Check it out!

Scenes from the Northwoods Historic Registry Nomination 4

On Tuesday, April 24, students from Georgia State University’s Historic Preservation program presented their findings about the Northwoods neighborhood to a large crowd at the Church of the New Covenant Church.  They explained why Northwoods was special historically, and that much of what made it special still exists today.  It was a great presentation, whose underlying findings will be used as the basis for a submission of Doraville’s Northwoods neighborhood to the US Register of Historic Places.

Very interestingly, Earnest Mastin, one of the original Northwoods architects was on hand, and had a few interjections to make about building methods used in the Northwoods subdivision and the early days of the neighborhood. Other attendees included representatives from the Georgia’s Historic Preservation Division, many students who worked on the nomination submission, and Doraville Mayor, Donna Pittman.
